I want to develope a reading function in my android app, so it can read a csv file in the device. Here is my code:

TextView CSV1;
TextView CSV2;
TextView CSV3;
TextView CSV4;
String[][] Data;
int numrecord=0;

However, whenever I click the button, the system ends unexpectedly, and error messages appear in error log, which mentioned null pointer exception occur in following few lines.

Data[numrecord][0]=RowData[0];
Data[numrecord][1]=RowData[1];
Data[numrecord][2]=RowData[2];
Data[numrecord][3]=RowData[3];

Can someone tell me what is the cause of exception?

My sample csv file contains two rows, each has four columns. Just similar to the example I make below:

1 1 in 8/6/2012
1 1 out 8/6/2012

If I make use of the following code in the while loop, it works fine:

while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null){
    String[] RowData = line.split(",");
    if(numrecord==0) {
        CSV1.setText(RowData[0]);
        CSV2.setText(RowData[1]);
        CSV3.setText(RowData[2]);
        CSV4.setText(RowData[3]);
    } else {
        CSV1.append(" "+RowData[0]);
        CSV2.append(" "+RowData[1]);
        CSV3.append(" "+RowData[2]);
        CSV4.append(" "+RowData[3]);
    }
    numrecord++;
}

That's why I think problem is on Data array

the example you gave does not contain any commas, are you sure the file you are handling has commas? –  Nelson Osacky Aug 6 '12 at 7:35
    
I think you have to initialize String[][] Data; with some size. Something like, String[][] Data = new String[2][4]; –  user370305 Aug 6 '12 at 7:36
    
But if I initialize the array, then the size is fixed, because what I want to do is to read a csv file which can have vary numbers of row but fixed number of columns. –  Conrad Aug 6 '12 at 7:42
    
Initialize size of Data as per size of your csv file data rows and columns at runtime. –  user370305 Aug 6 '12 at 7:43

You are not creating an array of String[].

Something like this:

String[][] Data;
Data=new String[100];
Data[0]=new String[10];
Data[1]=new String[10];

I'd suggest to use List<T> instead of array.

List<String[]> list;

list=new ArrayList<String>();

 while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null){
     String[] RowData = line.split(",");
     list.add(RowData);
 }
