I wanted to know how to encrypt a file or a photo which will eventually uploaded into the dropbox.

As i have research online and only manage to found this code (pasted at the bottom) which only encrypt the password, but I wanted to know how to encrypt a file or a photo which will eventually uploaded into the dropbox instead.

So is there any reference or help or guide on how to write a java programming ( will be using on Eclipse software ) on encrypting a file using triple DES? Thank you so much.

Any good reason for using 3DES instead of a modern cipher like AES? And what are you using as key? A random number, or a user entered password? In the second case you need to apply key strengthening. I also strongly recommend using authenticated encryption in some form. –  CodesInChaos Aug 10 '12 at 10:30
    
Authenticated encryption may not be needed if the photo is only uploaded to dropbox. –  owlstead Aug 10 '12 at 13:50

No random IV, and I don't know why you would want to convert a secret key to a secret key. Otherwise you do read in the file (there is a convenience method in Java 7 for that) and you correctly perform DESede encryption. The IV should be created by secure random and prepended. –  owlstead Aug 10 '12 at 9:59
    
Corrected for the key thanks. The IV initialization can be discussed depending on what is wanted. The alternative version with a secure random is as follow : SecureRandom random = new SecureRandom(); byte bytes[] = new byte[8]; random.nextBytes(bytes); IvParameterSpec lIVSpec = new IvParameterSpec(bytes); –  Laucia Aug 10 '12 at 11:11

It allows to create a key that can be used in the Cipher from a 24 byte long bytearray. If the byte array pKey isn't 24 byte long a GeneralSecurityException is raised by DESedeKeySpec. If you already have a SecretKey or a PublicKey use it directly –  Laucia Aug 10 '12 at 13:04

A file can probably be read as a string of binary digits (lots of 1's and 0's). You could read the file, then encrypt the string using DES the same way you would a password, outputting the result to a new file.

Decryption would work the same way, reading the encrypted file, decrypting, and outputting to an unencrypted file.
