I am trying to compile SASL under MinGW and in a source file seterror.c there are two functions declared as follows:

There are no #defines around them at all. When I compile with: gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I.. -I../include -I../lib -I../sasldb -I../include -Wall -W -g -O2 -c seterror.c nm produces:

Why are there no addresses? If I run nm on the library I get:

Still no address, why? Lastly, when i try to link against the library I get errors saying undefined reference to '__imp__sasl_seterror'.

Can anyone help explain what is going on here?

The first is static and so local to the object, and they're both just prototypes. Are the function bodies there, too? –  James McLaughlin Aug 13 '12 at 17:38
    
You have a define on the command line, -DHAVE_CONFIG_H, which looks really strange. Usually these are used for include guards, but you don't seem to include any header? –  Jens Gustedt Aug 13 '12 at 17:50

Try adding some obviously bogus text in the function definitions; if you don't get compiler errors after that, there's probably something going on with the preprocessor. –  unwind Aug 13 '12 at 18:11

Neither of those define a function, they only declare it. They promise that you will provide that function, but don't provide it themselves. As a result, you get link errors when you break your promises.

You need to actually define the function in order to get an address and link to it.

There was a header line linked as follows:

LIBSASL_API void sasl_seterror(sasl_conn_t *conn, unsigned flags,

and LIBSASL_API was defined as:

Therefore, the function was being compiled as though it was going to be dynamically linked.

However, nm is still producing 00000000 T for sasl_seterror, but the linker isnt complaining about that function any more.
