I have a SQLite database storing all of my calendar events, modeled like so:

TimerEvent

  -title
 *Relationships

When you create an event, a TimerEvent is created, and the three date values are plugged in. Then, a relationship to an EventInfo entity is created, with the event's location, title, notes, and reminder/recurring keys plugged in. If the recurring key is not -1, a Repeat entity is created based on the number of repeat dates that fall between the TimerEvent date and a date determined from user input.

My calendar than reads all of the dates, displays them, and then in my AgendaView can display all of the information from the "parent" entity (EventInfo is NOT a parent entity of Repeat. It just has a one-to-many relationship with the many repeats that could be created). An issue arises when editing... If I wanted to edit one of the repeat events, only that event (not the one's following, or the one's before), and i traced the Repeat object back up to the EventInfo object, changing that info would change the info for every event. I can only imagine two solutions to this:

1. Add extra NSString attributes to repeat events for when events are edited
2. Create a new event JUST for that object, nullify the existing relationship, 
   and use the repeatDate as the main date.

I would have the repeated events pulled out to single events in the EventInfo table while using the Repeat Table to keep track of all the events. So the Repeat table handles the common information about all the repeated events, while you create a separate EventInfo record for each instance of the repeated event. Such as below

Event Info

  • Item 1 - Not repeated
  • Item 2 - Repeated (Repeat ID 1)
  • Item 3 - Repeated (Repeat ID 1)
  • Item 4 - Repeated (Repeat ID 2)
  • Item 5 - Repeated (Repeat ID 2)
  • Item 6 - Not repeated

Repeat

  • Repeat 1 - Repeat common info
  • Repeat 2 - Repeat common info

so have a table (repeat) that keeps track of all dates that could possibly be on the calendar, then have each one of the dates tie back to an individual eventInfo and get rid of the TimerEvent all together? –  HighFlyingFantasy Aug 15 '12 at 17:19
    
Repeat would keep track of the common data for the repeated event. Each repeated event would be its own event in the EventInfo table with a link back to the Repeat table. –  Mark S. Aug 15 '12 at 21:42

Solved by creating an individual TimerEvent with it's own EventInfo for each repeat event, added a repeatID attribute to the TimerEvent's, added a search for repeatID's in order to get all of those associated to the current event. The ID's are generated from a new NSUserDefault key that assigns and increments every time a new repeating event is created.
