I recently started working on an application that consists of three tiers. The front end is a website hosted on a godaddy server that my companies customers use to pay their bills. the second tier is a windows service running on the same godaddy server that receives requests from the website and forwards them to another server running the third tier which is where the data is stored and is basically always connected to the server service and its just sitting idle waiting for incoming requests.

Now when a user logs into our website and tries to see a list of available products, the website creates a new connection to the server then sends data over the connection to our server service which relays it to the client. The communication between the server and the client is fine, less than 2 seconds round trip, the problem is that the website has to create a new socket connection to the server service every time there is a request. This leads to the websites individual pages taking upwards of 15 seconds to load. Which, by my bosses definition, is unacceptable.

My boss has been receiving speed complaints since the product launched and has charged me with figuring out a quicker/more reliable way to get the information from my website to the server service.

Since both the server service and the website can see a common database, my first thought was to create a new table in the database and call it something like Requests, then instead of creating a new connection to the server service everytime a request is made, the website would write a record to the database table and then wait for the server service to see the request in the "Queue", forward the request to the client to be responded to then write a response to the database either overwriting the data that the website wrote or filling in an output column or something along those lines.

I put together a very low scale version of this system using a local database, front end form to mimic the website and a background worker thread to mimic the server service and the results were very promising(ie no 15 second wait just to establish a connection)

My questions are: Is this approach secure? (assuming the objects being passsed are serialized and encrypted before being written to the database and the server service just shuffles the serialized/encrypted data to the data server)

And does this, in theory, seem like a viable alternative to establishing a new connection everytime a user wants to access information from the clients machine? I've never seen this type of structure mentioned before and since I came up with it(I think) I'm having trouble coming up with disadvantages so I'm hoping an outside perspective can uncover any short comings that I probably have missed before I attempt to gut the system that already works and that I know is secure.
