So I've got a hash problem...I think:

I have two hashes I'm comparing against. At some point in my code I get a response such as..

@moves = {:wm01 => {:a1=>"O", :a2=>" ", :a3=>" ", :b1=>" ", :b2=>"O", :b3=>" ", :c1=>" ", :c2=>" ", :c3=>" "}

This corresponds to an answer key hash...

@anskey = {
    :wm01=>":c3",:wm02=>":c2",:wm03=>":c1",:wm04=>":b3",:wm05=>":b1",:wm06=>":a3",:wm07=>":a2",:wm08=>":a1",
    :wm09=>":a3",:wm10=>":c1",:wm11=>":a1",:wm12=>":c3",:wm13=>":c3",:wm14=>":c1",:wm15=>":c3",:wm16=>":a1",

in this case I need to iterate @anskey where @moves.keys == @anskey.keys

(seems simple enough but dosen't seem to be working)

and then set....

my_answer_is = @anskey.value

so something like this???

go past that sentence...ultimately I need to say my_answer_is = ":c3"...hope that's better. –  thefonso Aug 18 '12 at 0:02

When you say @moves.keys you get an array of all the keys in @moves.

In the line if @moves.keys == key, you are trying to compare the one-element array [:wm01] with the symbol :wm01, but they will never be equal because they are different types.

If you know @moves at that point in the code will only have one key, you can just get it by doing @moves.keys.first. Then use that key to index into @anskey instead of looping through it:

@anskey[@moves.keys.first]

You shouldn't loop through a hash checking all the keys for equality. The point of a hash is that the hash[key] syntax gives you the value for key without any looping necessary.

Strings are not symbols.

One of your hashes has strings like ":c3", which will not equal :c3*.

You can convert a string to a symbol using .to_sym, or symbol to string with .to_s.

As Max says, there's no (good?) reason to store strings instead of symbols; if you can change your code, use symbols as values as well as keys, and skip the conversion altogether. This is preferred, IMO.

* Unless you're in Rails or using an equivalent to HashWithIndifferentAccess.
