I have a working screenshot code that I got from here (stackoverflow). Problem is I can't do it asynchronously. My screen is all black.

Is this possible? If yes, how will I do it?

Here's the code I'm using

The following is a suggestion you could try to do to do SOME stuff on the separate thread, but you still have to get the OpenGL pixels from the main thread. My suggestion would be to save the pixels to the buffer on the main thread, and then schedule the background task to create the UIImage with that buffer.

Instead of saving the buffer array as a class variable, you could actually send the buffer as NSData on the performSelectorInBackground call, and then add the parameter on finishScreenshot.

As I said, I'm not sure of the viability of this, but this should work. Try to do this and check if it really is worth the effort performance wise.

Thanks the code works. Now the problem is that the buffer is leaking. I can only produce 17 screenshots and it'll crash (I think I'm just running out of memory). I tried freeing the buffer ivar and buffer2 local variable and it crashes after taking the screenshot. I have no callstack so I really don't know what happened. –  Sylpheed Aug 22 '12 at 7:13
    
Im glad it did. Looking at the code again, you have to free the memory allocated on both buffer and buffer2. If i were you, id add free(buffer2); and free(buffer1), buffer1=NULL; –  Andres C Aug 22 '12 at 16:43

It's not possible.

The OpenGL view can only be modified and accessed from the main thread, so any attempt to grab the OpenGL framebuffer's contents in another thread will fail.
