There is a need to run two different kinds of workloads on the same device (something like an ARM Cortex-A8 tablet), at different points in time, almost every day.

  1. Completely non-interactive, computation heavy workload. This is the primary workload, that should saturate the device from computational power standpoint, for 90% of the time. Intuitively, I feel that Android itself (i.e. excluding the underlying Linux kernel and essential libraries that my non-interactive application needs), may be an overhead best avoided, since it'd be consuming CPU cycles and RAM, for the GUI and other Android house-keeping tasks. I'd prefer to remove those overheads, and allocate the resources to the background application.

  2. Highly interactive, media-rich workload, that presents the results of the other, primary workload, to the user. This runs for a max. 10% of the time (and sometimes much less). This, requires Android.

Both the workloads need not be run at the same time.

Android is the preferred platform for the 2nd workload, because -

  1. The application already exists (albeit in a proof-of-concept form), but today pulls the content from servers. I need to create/massage the content on the device itself, because it is quite a volume, and the device needs to operate "offline" as much as possible.

  2. Today, only Android is supported on this device. Have not found a Debian image for this device. Also, this being a low-cost east-asian device, I am not sure, the Android source-code or something like Cyanogenmod exists, which I could tweak.

So my question is --

Is there a possible solution, especially regarding the choice of OS, on this device, that helps free-up as many resources (CPU cycles and RAM), for the primary workload, yet help me retain Android for the interactive part ?

I would just run the workload in android. Your workload is very unlikely to fall in the narrow band where it will work on Debian, but not on Android. If android can't run it, you'll probably need external resources. –  Eric Aug 18 '12 at 16:09
Thanks @Eric. The computation-heavy workload today, might struggle under Android, as some preliminary experiments suggest. The biggest constraint, apparently being amount of system RAM. My thoughts around Debian vs Android, stem from something I read about minimalistic Debian system being able to operate in less than 32MB of RAM, versus Android 'Gingerbread', which seems to be consuming about five times that. Of course, minimalistic Debian won't suffice for my compute-heavy workload, as it needs few heavy libraries, but still, it should leave a lot more of working memory, compared to Android. –  icarus74 Aug 18 '12 at 17:17
