I am new to R for solving optimization problem: assigning items (number is large, in millions) to combination of three groups (categories in the groups are less, less than 6). Each item can be assigned to any combinations of three groups with set of constraints. So problem becomes large problem.

here is my example for illustration

l - set of items(in millions)

i-group1, i may take values 1,2,3

j-group2, j may take values 1,2

k-group3, K may take values 1,2,3

cijk- cost of allocating one item to ijk combination

rijk-Return on allocating item l to ijk combination

xijk (decision variable)binary {0,1} assignment of l to ijk

objective    
max sum{xijk*rijk}
Constraints
sum over jk {xijk*cijk} <= bi for all i ##Budget constraint
sum over ik {xijk} <= cj for all j  
sum over jk {xijk} <= 1 for all i,l ##max one assignment for all l in i
sum over ijk{xijk} <= 2 for all l
xijk{0,1}

Is it possible to solve such problem using R, suggest any function/package available in R, any help or hint solving such problem.

the function optim should do this, so long as you write your function and constraints correctly... i think. It is a little hard to sort out what you're doing, maybe with some sample data we could understand better and help more... –  Justin Aug 20 '12 at 15:18
