I have this exception:

It points to these two methods:

which calls this method and sends a null intent:

What I am wondering is why the intent is sent as null on a pretty regular basis. It must be something I am not doing right in my code, and the root of the problem is likely elsewhere.

Can you show us your BillingReceiver code ? This is where the BillingService is supposed to be started (usually with an intent, I don't think of another way to do it...) –  Orabîg Aug 25 '12 at 13:01

The code you've posted looks ok as far as I can tell. I have a null check in my BillingService class:

public void handleCommand(Intent intent, int startId)
{
    if (intent != null)
    {
        String action = intent.getAction();
            .....
    }
}

I did it some time ago and to be honest can't remember specifically why its there.

yeah I was thinking to add a null check as well, and I will do that, but I am just wondering why that happens, and why sometimes it is null. In my case the null is common. –  Genadinik Aug 25 '12 at 14:00

Which will fix the null pointer problem and the deprecation issue related to onStart().

Basically, the fix is to use onStartCommand() instead of onStart() as follows:

public int onStartCommand(Intent intent, int flags, int startId) {
   handleCommand(intent, startId);
   return START_NOT_STICKY;
}
