I used the dynamic LINQ extension to build the filters. It seems to work fine.


I am actually building an advanced gridview with dynamic filters. To achieve this, I am dynamically building my LINQ queries and using them this way:

//Item1 = member name
//Item2 = filter name
//Item3 = value that will be compared to the records fields

public Func<T, bool> ComposeFilter(IEnumerable<Tuple<string, string, object>> filterDescriptors) {
        return new Func<T, bool>(
            x => {
                var result = true;
                foreach (var descriptor in filterDescriptors) {
                    var member = Members.First(m => m.Name == descriptor.Item1);
                    var filter = member.Filters.First(f => f.Name == descriptor.Item2);
                    var access = ((MemberInfo<T>)member).Member.Compile();
                    result &= filter.Filter(access(x), descriptor.Item3);
                }
                return result;
            }
        );
    }

Further:

dataSource = UserModule.Query().Where(userClassInfo.ComposeFilter(e.FilterInfoSet));

The problem is that the logged generated SQL looks like this:

select user0_.Id as Id0_, user0_.LastName as LastName0_, user0_.FirstName as FirstName0_ from `User` user0_

Should I understand that the above code is not executed on the database but on the application? In this case, can you give me the proper way to achieve this? I want NHibernate to generate some where clauses, not to load all result in memory before filtering them.

There are two problems with your code.

The first is how you are declaring your method:

Func<T, bool> ComposeFilter

When you do that, you are returning a compiled delegate, and the Where extension method overload that gets chosen is from Enumerable instead of Queryable.

You have to declare it as:

Expression<Func<T, bool>> ComposeFilter

The second problem is that the code you wrote cannot be converted to an expression tree. Since you are not using primitives but constructing the expression dynamically, you need to learn about the stuff in System.Linq.Expressions.

ok that's was what i expected, i need to build an expression rather than a function. I wonder why i didn't get a "Not supported exception". Does NHibernate reconize string.Contains function ? –  QuickSort Aug 26 '12 at 3:07
    
NHibernate was never seeing your code. As soon as Enumerable takes over, the unfiltered query is executed, and then the results are filtered by Linq-to-objects. –  Diego Mijelshon Aug 26 '12 at 13:43
