I am trying to open email attachments that i pull from a gmail inbox that are saved as (.xml). I understand that it should be encoded in some MIME format, but when i use DATA::DUMPER after pulling attachements, i get the MIME formatting and then a block of gibberish for the .xml attachement. I have tried using Email::MIME::Encodings for a base64 encoding, but it doesnt seem to be able to decode the xml. I have looked around but have been unable to find any references on .xml decoding. Does anybody know of any modules or how i can convert a .xml email attachment into plain text? I have been using regular expressions to parse out some xml data stored in a text file, so i would like to apply the same regex to the .xml attachement.

Here is an example of the output without any decoding:

Your MIME parser should really decode the content for you, but if it doesn't and Content-Transfer-Encoding is set to base64, you can pass the content to MIME::Base64's decode_base64. That will return the XML. You also ask how to convert XML to text, but that doesn't make any sense. –  ikegami Aug 27 '12 at 19:07
    
Are you Base64 decoding after your MIME parser has already Base64-decoded the content? Double decoding will produce gibberish like you show. –  cjm Aug 27 '12 at 20:15
    
The base64 fragment you posted decodes nicely into <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <Infringement xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.acns.net/v1.2/ACNS2v1_. Maybe you are decoding the wrong data. What input decodes into $VAR1? Running it through base64 produdces SAoJMcOxwq93bcO+Cg== but I'm not sure I have copy/pasted your example correctly. –  tripleee Aug 28 '12 at 7:09
    
Just to be explicit, the data you should feed to the base64 decoder begins with PD94bWwgdmV and ends (here) with L0FDTlMydjFf. A competently written base64 decoder should be robust against spurious DOS carriage returns, but if you have a literal caret and uppercase M ^M then all bets are off. –  tripleee Aug 28 '12 at 7:12
    
And; a competently written MIME decoder would know what do do based on the MIME headers you have pasted, but of course, if you have removed the headers for the multipart which defines the boundary _chilkat_c97_9f83_b921b009.65ad83c8_.MIX then what you have is indeed an isolated piece of gibberish, not a well-defined, standards-compliant MIME part. It might be possible to salvage it by removing the boundary and feeding the rest to your MIME parser, or you could decode everything starting from the containing top-level MIME message. –  tripleee Aug 28 '12 at 7:16
