I'm getting started building an API. The purpose of the API I'm building will be to share functionality between other applications we control (a private API). For example, we have a PHP application that our employees log into to manage other applications. Rather than duplicating business logic and using the database as the API, I would like to create a real API.

Some example endpoints:

  • /groups
  • /groups/123/users
  • /users/123/groups

Since the API is private, it API needs to be protected from the outside world, but I don't want our employees to have to worry about logging in again, or managing tokens...this should all happen behind the scenes.

I am new to handling this type of authentication, so I'm a little lost as to how to approach it. Have you dealt with this type of API before? What authentication approach did you take? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.

What existing approaches have been looked into? Cookie-based solutions such as those that support standard sessions? What about Single Sign-On solutions that use cookies/redirects to transmit auth tokens? (Since it sounds like employees have to sign on once somewhere ..) –  user166390 Aug 29 '12 at 6:05
    
Yeah, employees sign into the "admin app" and saves the user ID in the session. From this "admin app" employees will be able to manage records in the "product app". The "product app" has its own login for our clients and will use the API for displaying/updating some records, but not all because some records are only meant for the employees to update. –  Andrew Aug 29 '12 at 15:31
