I've tried many different GL_SPECULAR, but none of them give the shiny effect i expect.

What's wrong with the code?

You haven't specified any glNormal for the GL_QUADS. You may also need to consider glEnable(GL_NORMALIZE) to preserve unit lengths after modelview transformations.

It still doesn't work if I add glNormal to each vertex.Do you have a working example with glOrtho? –  new_perl Aug 30 '12 at 5:14

I don't see anything wrong with that code, but you don't show what you're drawing. If you don't have correct vertex normals, then shininess won't work.

A single rectangle is not going to give a good illustration of specular light, because whatever specular light contributes to its color will be uniform over the rectangle. –  JWWalker Aug 29 '12 at 15:52
    
Do you mean one can't see the effect of specular light in 2D after glOrtho? –  new_perl Aug 30 '12 at 5:21
    
No, I mean you can't see the effect of specular light clearly on a flat surface. To see specular highlights well, you want a curved surface. –  JWWalker Aug 30 '12 at 6:09
