I'm trying to send and receive encrypted messages between a Java application and a C application using bouncycastle and openssl, respectively, with (AES (128 bit) / CBC / PKCS5Padding), and via a socket connection. However, I get only strange characters on both sides. Theoretically, bouncycastel and openssl should "talk". Saw on google that could be the key and IV ... but, on both sides, these values ​​are identical. Have I tried removing the padding (using NoPadding parameter in BouncyCastle) and filling with a other routine. I used both GetBytes () as a method I found (stringToBytesUTFNIO ()) to convert the String into byte array and nothing; The application flow is as follows: My client (PHP / javascript + java) creates a socket and registers itself in a chat server (C). Upon receiving the registration request, the server creates a 16 byte key and inserts it into a bank in hexadecimal format. My client will wait for a signal from the server to query the database and get the key, converting it to a byte array.

When sending a message, the client calculates the iv filling an array of 16 positions with the outcome of an equation based on message size. This same operation is done on the server side;

For purposes of testing, I put an array of bytes[16] with value 0x0 in both the key and iv, the client and the server. No positive response. With that, I use the bouncycastle normally.

If I make the operation of encryption / decryption only with java, it works. The application can also run perfectly C routines alone. The problem occurs when we try to make a decrypt / encrypt messages to / from another. Openssl or BouncyCastle have any requirement or some configuration needed?Am I missing something? I do not use private / public key .. Truly, this is my first application with encryption... Any help will be very welcome. Thank you in advance.

I would first try to split the problem space in half. Is the message as received over the socket precisely identical (length too!)? Are the parameters going to the encryption/decryption routines exactly what they should be? If the answer to both questions is yes, then you would investigate whether the two enc/dec implementations are configured identically. –  David Schwartz Aug 30 '12 at 1:44
    
Your question talks about PKCS5Padding, while your code says getPadding()=="NoPadding" Make sure that the same PKCS5 padding is explicitly set at both sides. –  rossum Aug 30 '12 at 12:18

I checked and saw that the message is the same size and has the same characters when it reaches the other side (application C / server). The key and IV are equal on both sides. I saw the java interprets a hex value into two characters, but openssl plays a hex value for each character. Although my iv showing 32 characters, in fact, he has 16 bytes in size. Example: my message (1234567891011121 - a block exactly 16 characters ie it does not require padding) encrypted in java looks like this: db72c711b2d63665b4139faa28e1011d. –  user1634586 Aug 31 '12 at 1:21
    
Both sides use a routine that checks to fill the amount of characters needed to complete the last block of 16 and uses that value obtained to fill the remaining positions, In this case, it is not used.
