I've an XML file with the following structure:

<InterfaceLimits day="2012-08-22" xmlns="http://someurl.com/xml">
  <InterfaceLimitsHourly hour="1">
    <InterfaceLimit>
      <InterfaceLimitName>NAME1</InterfaceLimitName>
      <FlowMW>3684</FlowMW>
      <LimitMW>5100</LimitMW>
    </InterfaceLimit>
    <InterfaceLimit>
      <InterfaceLimitName>NAME2</InterfaceLimitName>
      <FlowMW>3310</FlowMW>
      <LimitMW>5900</LimitMW>
    </InterfaceLimit>
  </InterfaceLimitsHourly>
  <InterfaceLimitsHourly hour="2">
  ... etc.
</InterfaceLimits>

When I import this data into Excel, I get the following, nice, neat single table:

day        hour  InterfaceLimitName   FlowMW  LimitMW
8/22/2012  1     NAME1                3684    5100
8/22/2012  1     NAME2                3310    5900
... etc.

However, when I use the following method to import the XML file to a DataSet in .NET, I get the following multiple tables:

   day
0  2012-08-22

   hour
0  1
1  2
2  3
3  4
4  5
5  6
6  7
... etc.

   InterfaceLimitName  FlowMW  LimitMW
0  NAME1               3684    5100
1  NAME2               3310    5900
... etc.

The code snippet I'm using to import the file is as follows:

_sourceDS.ReadXml(_downloadFile, XmlReadMode.Auto)

where _sourceDS is an empty DataSet and _downloadFile is a String containing the full path to the downloaded XML file.

Any ideas how I could (semi-automatically and without knowing the structure ahead of time) force the import into a single table a la Excel?

The DataSet will always create three tables from your XML.

You could try to load it into a DataTable instead, but then you have to provide a schema, and while I don't know if it would actually work, it's probably not what you want.

So only solution is to just merge your DataSet into a single DataTable.

This works exactly as you describe and joins the tables together. I was hoping for something a little more elegant and without the unnecessary columns, but beggars can't be choosers. :-) I'm curious how the Excel developers solved this problem. –  dthagard Aug 30 '12 at 14:31
