I'm getting an undefined references linker error only when linking optimized objects files, not when linking unoptimized object files. I don't understand what the problem is or could be.

Here is my unoptimized build:

The file COMPASS.h includes this class template:

Show the code. It's suspicious that you're getting a warning about showDecimals earlier in the log and then getting a linker error that refers to it later on, for what it's worth. –  Stuart Golodetz Sep 3 '12 at 19:08

@StuartGolodetz Sorry, I fixed the showDecimals problem. I had the inline prototype in a header file, and the inline body of the function in a code file. I simply put the inline body in the header file, and now there's no longer a prototype separate from the function body. That problem is now resolved. int VisitedSet<T>::getSize() is a templated function, so its definition should be in a header file like COMPASS.h, not in COMPASS.cpp.

As a side point, it's interesting to note that (from what I recall) you have to be careful with template specializations - partial template specializations (which still depend on a template parameter) should go in a header, but full template specializations (which don't) should go in a .cpp file. –  Stuart Golodetz Sep 3 '12 at 20:27
