Maqchine 1: My code that uses 3D FFT from FFTW3 shows some 1.5x speedup from threading (for the FFT part only) when I compile and run it on my dual core PC with OpenMP (gcc+gfortran 4.6) and link to the distribution release (OpenSuSE 11.4) of FFTW3 (which includes and

Machine 2: Now when I transfer this code to my 2 x 8 core processor machine and compile it the same way, I get no speedup. Note that I am using self compiled FFTW3 (on RH6 there is no OpenMP enabled FFTW3), compiled with:

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/fftw-gcc --enable-float --enable-threads --enable-openmp --enable-sse --enable-sse2 --enable-avx --enable-shared


$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/fftw-gcc --enable-threads --enable-openmp --enable-sse2 --enable-avx --enable-shared

I checked using profiler (Oracle Solaris Studio collect and analyzer) that only the master thread is doing any work. However, when I tried thes example, I definitely see the expected speedup and the profiler shows the sharing of work between threads. I compiled this test as

g++ -fopenmp -O3  -I/usr/local/fftw-gcc/include -L/usr/local/fftw-gcc/lib -lfftw3 -lfftw3_omp -fopenmp fft.C

I checked using debugging writes, that I indeed call fftw_init_threads() and receive 1 (0 would mean an error) and I call call fftw_plan_with_nthreads(int(nthreads,c_int)) where nthreads is really the number I want which is received from omp_get_num_threads() previously.

I am really puzzled by this. I even tried compiling my code without OpenMP, but with -lpthread and passing the thread number explicitly , but the result was the same.

----edit---- Summary of the situation:

Machine 1 (dual core):

-2 threads vs. 1 thread : 1.5x speedup, both threads fully occupied (my code)

Machine 2 (2x8 cores):

-no speedup and only one thread working, others idle (my code)

-however, reasonable speedup for the C++ test referenced above

This code I use for enabling threads. Those 2 writes are just to be sure, that correct number of threads is sent to FFTW.

Have you verified that omp_get_num_threads() is correctly executing with different values? Maybe its always returning the same value on the other machine. – Brady Sep 6 '12 at 16:08
