I was in process to develop an application in which I want to prove that the given string is palindrome or not but I don't want to use string builder of string buffer class I want to proceed with string class , Please advise how to achieve this..!

The only advice we can give you is to, well, write a java program that decides whether a string is a palindrome. the 'charAt' method on the String class is likely to prove helpful. –  bmargulies Sep 9 '12 at 16:48

Compare first with last character, and so on.

for (int i = 0; i < input.length() / 2; i++)
   if (input.charAt(i) != input.charAt(input.length() - i - 1))
      return false;

return true;

I would avoid repeated charAt in favor of caching str.toCharArray and doing direct array access. –  oldrinb Sep 9 '12 at 16:58

A palindrome is a string such that the first half is equivalent to the second half... hopefully you recognize this means you only have to iterate forward/backward from the respective ends of the string until you reach the middle.

static boolean palindromic(final String str) {
  final char[] cs = str.toCharArray();
  for (int f = 0, b = cs.length - 1; f < b; ++f, --b) {
    if (cs[f] != cs[b]) {
      return false;
    }
  }
  return true;
}

If you must ensure this is compatible with any UTF-16 string, you must use codePointAt...

static boolean palindromic(final String str) {
  for (int f = 0, b = str.length() - 1; f < b; ++f, --b) {
    if (str.codePointAt(f) != str.codePointAt(b)) {
      return false;
    }
  }
  return true;
}

Otherwise, each character not in the Basic Multilingual Plane (i.e. characters for Supplemental Multilingual and Ideographic, as well as the various unassigned, special-purpose and private-use planes) will be represented by a surrogate pair of char. It is necessary to ensure the pair is handled as a single code point.

Just create a second string that is the reverse of the original and compare them.

String org = "abba"; String rev = new StringBuffer(org).reverse().toString(); If(org.equals(rev) {}

Might do a toLower() as well.
