I'm having trouble linking a very simple c++ program on OSX Lion. The error message is

Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64: "std::basic_string<char, std::char_traits<char>

I've seen various posts saying that this kind of error is due to people using gcc instead of g++ but in my case I use g++. I'm compiling using a macports built GCC 4.8.

Note that this simple program would compile fine on the same system. After a clean install all of a sudden it refuses to compile.

The missing symbol is the move assignment operator for std::string. I'm going to guess here that what's going on is you're mixing object files/libraries that are compiled with libstd++ and libc++.

@Jubei: Just some guesses. You could try using libc++ instead of libstdc++. You could also try switching to clang++ and passing the -stdlib= flag explicitly (not sure if g++ supports that). –  Kevin Ballard Sep 12 '12 at 6:30
    
clang DOES compile and link fine but I'd like to use GCC if possible. Anyway thank you very much for the help, I'll wait for a few more answers then mark yours as correct. –  Jubei Sep 12 '12 at 6:41

Propably you link with /usr/lib/libstdc++ but for 4.8 you need link with (...)/gcc4.8/lib/libstdc++, it's diferent libraries.
