I am working with this legacy code in a Rails 3 app.

# Contacts
contact_searchable_columns = [
contact_conditions = [ contact_searchable_columns.map{ |c| "#{c} LIKE :q" }.join(' OR '), { :q => "%#{@query}%" } ]
@contacts = current_account.contacts.paginate(:all, :include => :customer, :order => 'customers.name', :page => params[:page], :conditions => contact_conditions)

This will successfully return a match if I have the last name right, or the first name. But if I have the first and last name in the query, then it will not return.

How would I write it so that if at least "one word match in a query of a group of words" could return the match as well?

For example, if I have David, I can search for it. If his last name is Crocker, then I can search for that. But if I search for David Crocker, then no results return.. This worked flawlessly for you? –  Trip Sep 12 '12 at 12:59

To resolve your problem you could do a little sql hax in your search conditions like this:

Create a column that joins the two names into one.

contact_searchable_columns = [
  "contacts.first_name||' '||contacts.last_name",

This way the query would be something like this:

SELECT * FROM contacts WHERE contacts.first_name||' '||contacts.last_name LIKE '%David Crocker%' ... 

The idea is simple, so i believe you can adapt to your own domain.


Try using concat() instead of || like this:

contact_searchable_columns = [
  "concat('contacts.first_name', ' ', 'contacts.last_name')",

I didn't tried this, so i believe the syntax may contain errors.

MySQL uses concat() instead of || or + as others DBMSs. I will edit the answer with a test try. –  MurifoX Sep 12 '12 at 13:31
