I have the oddest issue with PHP exec, I am using it to run a long running php script.

We call the script like this:

exec("php somescript.php >> null 2>&1 & echo $!",$op);

Now, most of the time this works - but every now and then it will just stop working $op will still return a PID (which doesn't exist) and the process simply won't run, PHP doesn't even get called so the process is effectively killed before it's even started.

If I run this sudo -u apache it works fine, if I run this without pushing it to the background it also works fine.

The really odd thing is, it will just suddenly begin to work again without any other information. I've checked error logs, i've checked suexec logs even system logs and there is no obvious reason why this would happen

It appears to be a process limit issue however we have no limits set on apache and happens regardless of load.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try nohuping it. Also >> null will (I think?) append the output to a file called null in the CWD rather than blackholing it, which I imagine is what you want. Try $pid = (int) exec('nohup php somescript.php > /dev/null 2>&1 & echo $!', $out, $error);. $error will be a non-zero error code if there was an error creating the process. – DaveRandom Sep 14 '12 at 10:53

I see what you're doing with >> null now, makes more sense - but maybe you could give the file a more intuitive name ;-) Has it logged anything to the file yet? When it does happen another useful bit of logging would be to log the PID and the return code ($error in my code sample) and maybe even a ps dump. You could ps | grep for the PID after starting it to make sure it's still running and if not, dump that info to file with the date/time and any other system state info you can think of that might be useful, and then you can see if there's any corresponding message in syslog. – DaveRandom Sep 14 '12 at 11:14

Thanks again Dave, Yeh could use something more meaningful :) It never logs anything to the file (even if we put a script in the way which does JUST that) and doesn't matter whether we're executing a bash or a php script same issue, literally it returns a PID and then does nothing as if it never happened it's very odd – ipuk Sep 17 '12 at 8:37
