I have two functions that will open and save two diffrent reports based on the same criteria. They are identical except for the refrences:

Function Export_MLR()

Then I created this function to select the data and put it into the table that the reports refrence line by line:

Now all of this worked like a charm but it created, on average 16 .pdf files per minute and I had to create 820 .pdf files(about 50 minutes). If this is the best I can do then I will take it but would love to cut this time in half if possible. Thanks for any and all input. NR

Just for clarity, Export_Invoice and Export_MLR end up using the data from tbl_Form_Auto? – Daniel Cook Sep 14 '12 at 20:03
    
Export_Invoice and Export_MLR open the report witch runs a querry using tbl_Form_Auto to populate the report. thanks! – Nick Rossi Sep 14 '12 at 20:14
    
in your Do Until rs1.EOF loop, is it necesary to query "tbl_Form_Auto every time it loops, or can you open the recordset before entering the loop? Querying the table every time the loop repeats can possibly add significant and unneceesary query execution time to the loop. – TexasTubbs Sep 17 '12 at 12:57
    
@ texastubbs tbl_form_auto is the staging area for which data the report shows. I create a pdf for each product in a market. Each market has multipe products. So the first time it will be market = 1 product =1 the second time it might be market = 74 product = 5. I would love to just have one massive report but they have to be broken down into 1 market 1 product per report. – Nick Rossi Sep 17 '12 at 14:14
    
@HasnsUp I have step through multiple time and to me it seems like the two functions take up the most time. Each function opens its respected report and runs a query to populate the form and then saves and closes. If I get some time today I think I am going to look closer at the queries behind the reports to see if I can change something there. In a comment you indicated the bulk of the time is spent in your functions which export the reports to PDF. I'm uncertain whether we can speed those up.

It seems you open a report, reference a value in that report for use as part of the PDF file name, then call the OutputTo method with the same report name to save it as PDF.

In that situation, I'm uncertain what happens "under the hood" ... whether Access opens a second instance of the report object, or is smart enough to see that you already have an instance open and just use that one instead.

As a test, try to signal Access to use the first report instance. From the online help for the ObjectName parameter of the OutputTo method:

If you want to output the active object, specify the object's type for the ObjectType argument and leave this argument blank.

So what I'm suggesting is try this in your code:

DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, , "PDFFormat(*.pdf)", _
    strReportName, False, , , acExportQualityScreen

If Access complains, try it with an empty string for the ObjectName parameter.

DoCmd.OutputTo acOutputReport, "", "PDFFormat(*.pdf)", _
    strReportName, False, , , acExportQualityScreen

I don't know how much (or even if) this suggestion will speed up your code. But if you can't speed up those export functions somehow, my hunch is your hope to cut the overall time by half is a shaky proposition.

thanks for taking some time to try and help me. It looks like the major time kill was on the query for the report. It was running a massive query every single time. So I am changing it to a make table and then refrencing it in the report query. The make table query takes about 5-10 seconds but the call functions went from about 3-4 seconds down to 1. Before I got 16 reports per min now I should get between 50-60 per min. – Nick Rossi Sep 17 '12 at 21:03
