I know similar questions like this have been asked on various forums, however none of the given solutions have worked for me, and was wondering if anyone had any other pointers they could give. I am basically trying to send a file (an image) over TCP between 2 computers on the same network. I have been trying to convert the image to a byte array, then to a string before sending the string. On the other side, I have received the string, converted to a byte array, and then convert back to an image. However, on the receiving side, the string is empty so I am getting an error when I then convert that to a byte array.

The code for the sending side is:

What's the definition of client in the client.Connect; and which version of VS is this using? – Stuart Whitehouse Sep 16 '12 at 19:35

Not sure if is the necessarily problem here, but I would suggest converting the bytes to string using System.Convert.ToBase64String(byte_array) This will always give a safe string with no awkward characters which can be transmitted in various ways.

I tried ToBase64String however that is giving me an empty string so I receive an error on the receiving side when it tries to convert an empty string to the byte array. – Crazyloonybin Sep 23 '12 at 12:26
In which case the problem is not the image stuff, the string just isn't being transmitted. One comment, although it's not the problem here is that the StreamReader.Read() returns an integer - your code would produce a list of Unicode numbers. Try ReadToEnd() to just get the entire text - no loop needed. I would suggest stripping out all the image stuff, and doing a test with just passing a string to the server, and reposting a new question around that if it is still just receiving an empty string – Stuart Whitehouse Sep 24 '12 at 12:06
