NOTE: (I know DX for managed code is deprecated and I plan on rewriting the code with SlimDX when I get some extra time.) I have been having a lot of trouble trying to handle a DeviceLostException. Unlike most DX applications I am not continually rendering frames I am only rendering when the content on the screen needs to be changed. This makes following the guides for handling DeviceLostExceptions a little tricky. I am writing a program that uses Nvidia's 3D Vision technology to display stereoscopic images. My display class is a border-less windows form class stretched to full screen. I have a base class called BaseStimulusDisplay that sets up the basic form and DirectX device and then I inherit from it to create a StereoStimulusDisplay object used for the display of stereo images. (I do this because I have some other types of displays for different aspects of the program.) The way the class works is I have two list of objects (stereoObjects and singleEyeObjects) which are basically just objects that contain some DX surfaces and some position info to determine where the surfaces should be drawn on the screen. When I want to display the objects on the screen I call a RenderScene method which loops through each object in the lists of objects and uses the StretchRectangle method to draw the object surfaces to the backbuffer and then call the preset(). To try and handle the DeviceLostException I put the device.Present() which is at the end of the Render Scene method in a try block that looks like this:

Now if I run the code and hit Alt-Tab to cycle through my open programs and go back to the DX app the code crashed at the following line in the renderScene method with a InvalidCallException;

Also if I Alt-Tab into another program (Not just cycle all they way through the list of apps back to my app) And then try to bring back up the app. The program never comes back up it just gets stuck in the do loop of the waitForDeviceRecovery method. By this I mean the device.TestCooperativeLevel() call keeps throwing the DeviceLostException and never the DeviceNotResetException. I am adding the complete code for both my display classes below.

Did the _device.Reset() call return ok? Also, Managed DX has been deprecated for a while, is there a decent reason you're not using XNA? –  slugonamission Sep 18 '12 at 20:48

It's been a while since I've used MDX, but if I remember correctly you should be handling the Device's OnDeviceLost, OnDeviceReset and OnDeviceDisposing events. Then, inside the OnDeviceLost event handler, you should call the OnLostDevice() method for each object used in your scene, such as Font objects, for example. –  xfx Jan 12 '13 at 9:20
    
Yes I have moved on to slimDX and have got it working. I think that I must have missed some resource that need disposeing. Maybe I will look back over my code and figure out what it was so I can have a conclusevie solution to this question. –  Alexander Van Atta Jan 14 '13 at 15:37
