I have a 3-tier c# application, with presentation layer business layer and data layer accessing the database,

I have a connection object from the data layer representing a database connection. I have User object that represents an application users(i.e a row from the user table) The user object exists in the business layer,

What is the best way to implement Save, Create, Delete functionality on the User object, should it be through some kind of data connector on the connection object, i.e. connection.userdataconnector.save(user), where dataconnector allows access to the user functionality (user table) or should it be through a function on the user object, i.e. User.Save();

What is the current trend?

P.S. I am using the SQLClient library and have seen many MSDN articles that use dataconnectors. Links to source code/sample apps that enforce your answer would be appreciated

Or you can use a light framework like Dapper and DapperExtensions. These frameworks can provide a robust entity mapping and basic CRUD implementation based on simple POCO entities. – gustavodidomenico Sep 24 '12 at 16:53

The current trend is to use ORM or light-weight ORM or even ADO.NET depending how complicated your application is but you can use:

  1. ADO.NET
  2. Light-weight ORM: Dapper, Massive.
  3. ORM: Entity Framework, NHibernate.

If your application is simple, just deal with CRUD operation, you could use (1) or (2). But if your application is much complex on business, you should use ORM which supports for you lots of features: Unit Of Work, Data Mapper, Lazy Loading... You also have another option to use NoSql to replace traditional database.

Btw, the term tier is not correct in this case, it should be called layer which reference to logical.

So I'll offer a counter generalization... if your app is small and simple it doesn't matter which technology you choose nearly as much as if your app will be large and complex. If your app is large and complex consider more carefully what technology you choose and be aware of the limitations you are marrying yourself too. – jsobo Sep 24 '12 at 17:15
    
Thanks for your answer, I know of these technologies but choose to use the System.Data library, my question was seeking more of a design based answer from people who have designed and used a data layer and business layers and how the data would interact or be updated via the business layer. But maybe I will consider moving to EF. – John Fleming Sep 24 '12 at 18:28

As others have said Entity Framework is the "current trend". If you're doing n-tier (read over different servers) you can have issues with serialisation among others. Have a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee321569.aspx for a few hints and tips.
