I need to potentially create a materialized view for a fairly large table.

The MV will be accessed afterwards using a group by (this is a fact table to be used by an olap cube).

In terms of size I am dealing with approximately 10 million records a month, 120 million a year and around 10 years. My facts are currently partitioned based using a symbol key which captures around 3 months worth of data.

That said, for my test load it takes around 30 minutes for 2 years of data.

Realistically, I only need to do a full load once. So the question is, do I need an MV or should I just use a long running query?

If I create an MV should I use any of the prebuilt table options for the MV so that I can index or partition the MV or should I just start out with a simple MV?

If I'm not being clear enough please ask and I will provide more detail.

You can create your materialized view as partitioned and add indexes to it even if you don't use a prebuilt table. I'd go with a partitioned materialized view and try to ensure it's fast refreshable so when you add a new month of data to your base table you only need to refresh the affected partition (assuming old months don't change). –  GuiGi Sep 24 '12 at 21:26

Check Oracle Database Data Warehousing Guide, Chapter 10 to get info on partitioned materialized views. Chapter 9 is useful too, to know the conditions your MV has to meet to be fast refreshable & enable query rewrite, and how to check your MV capabilities via DBMS_MVIEW.EXPLAIN_MVIEW. –  GuiGi Sep 25 '12 at 6:17
