I cant resize the columns in a JTable (Timeline lookalike). I copied the timeline class. And i wrote timelineUI myself. It feels like I have tried everything to resize the column but it seems impossible.

Here is the TimelineUI class, the important part is at the bottom where i'm trying to resize column 0.

This seems like a really simple problem but I cant figure it out. Do I need to define a ColumnModel by myself? I thought I could use the default one. I can add columns, change background color and so on but not resize. I'm Adding a picture that shows how it looks now. I want the whole text to show.

Any help woud be really appreciated. I spent allot of hours on this now.

In TimeLine.addColumn() table structure notifications are fired using SwingUtilities.invokeLater. The notifications will be executed asynchronously on EDT once all other pending events have been processed.

The trick is that fireTableStructureChanged() may trigger rebuilding of table's columns. You can find more details about fireTableStructureChanged in this answer. So what may happen is that you set preferred sizes and then fireTableStructureChanged() is executed and it resets the sizes back to default.

Not sure what is the intended logic there in that method (ie comment "fixes a nasty java vector bug"), but if you execute fireTableStructureChanged() and fireTableDataChanged() without SwingUtilities.invokeLater you should see the resized column.

Of course, you have to be on EDT, so if that fix is impossible you can execute column width setting using SwingUtilities.invokeLater().

Also note, that columns start from 0. You mention that you resize column 0, but in fact in code you access column 1.

WOW! You're right, that was the problem. I deletet the invoke later in both TimeLine.addColumn and TimeLine.initGrid and now it works like a charm (haven't seen any nasty bug jet..). Not sure what you mean with EDT. Earliest deadline .... ? And my first column visible seems to actually be column 0.
