I'm trying to parse a free form date string into a meaningful date. So far I've come up with this function:

Am I on the right track or is there a better way to go?

Update By free form string I mean this is coming from a wiki page, specifically the person data template. The date fields in this template are free form in that a human has typed something in it. Typically this is a date in any number of formats, or it is itself another wiki template describing the date. Here are some examples of what could be in the field:

{{Birth year and age|1933}}
August 23, 1967
1990-01-29
23 August 1967
1999
a;lsdfhals;djkfh

Perhaps you could specify what you mean by "free form date string". What does your function do? What is the significance of "{{Birth year and age|"? –  Greg Hewgill Oct 3 '12 at 22:40
    
Aha, I just now realised that you are parsing Wikipedia data pages, and that's where the funny {{ syntax comes from. –  Greg Hewgill Oct 4 '12 at 20:53

Probably the ultimate is parsedatetime.

Another choice would be dateutil.

This. Don't try to write your own. Free-form date parsers are out there for most languages, including Python, and work rather well given the uncertainty of their inputs. –  Mark Reed Oct 3 '12 at 22:51
    
Usually I use datetime.datetime.strptime(),but for difficult tasks I have seen dateutil being more flexible and complete. +1 for the parsedatetime tip (from a very hi-rep user, that should mean something :o) –  heltonbiker Oct 3 '12 at 22:53
    
@heltonbiker, don't let the rep sway you, it doesn't always mean I know what I'm talking about. In this particular case I've seen the page describing parsedatetime but I've never actually used it. I can personally vouch for dateutil though. –  Mark Ransom Oct 3 '12 at 22:56
