I see my app is stuck in deadlock state(the main thread is waiting in semaphore_wait_trap, see call stacks below) several times while calling more than one instances of CFStringTransform simultaneously in global background queue as follows:

It seems the problem happens in the string modification call doReplace. But it also seem doReplace is thread safe since it is using mutex so it should be OK for multiple threads to modify the same mutable string in the same time. In fact, in my case, no mutable string is being modified by more than one thread — each CFStringTransform is called for a unique string. So basically, I don't know why it is stuck.

Interesting.

The ICU string transformation lives in a library called libicucore. The Mac OS 10.8 version's source code is available here.

The doReplace function is implemented in icuSources/common/unistr.cpp but it does not call umtx_lock directly. iOS might use another version of the library or the call might just be inside an inlined function (or preprocessor magic). So I could not find out if the lock is a globally shared lock or if there's one per string.

Anyway, I did some testing on Mac OS (24k character strings, 10000 dispatched blocks) but did not succeed to reproduce the deadlock.

Are you sure your code is not still running? Are all threads in the same stack frame?

Yes, it is stuck and all threads calling doReplace have the same stack trace. As you found iOS and OS X are different, maybe you should test on iOS? –  an0 Oct 5 '12 at 21:36
