If anyone can answer my question or can point me in the right direction I will be so grateful as can't find anything anywhere.

My question is: How can I build a system where a user must enter a code on a keypad (physical with buttons, or touchscreen) that, if the right code is entered, then opens a lock/turns a motor.

The other part of the puzzle is that the keypad must check that code is correct remotely by calling a URL as the code will be changed each time it is entered correctly, a few times an hour.

I'm sorry if this question is a bit out of scope for this site. I am honestly at a loose end though.

Any advice at all on what to do or where to look would be great.

Im afraid that this is out of scope for Stack Overflow, though I'd love to know how this would work too. As there are so many ways to implement the programming aspect of this project, the remote call, this alone makes the question unsuitable (by being too open-ended). –  Alex Oct 6 '12 at 17:52
I feared someone would say that :-P I just wondered how you link the keypad to a local PC that would then make the call to the server to check the keycode entered. I'm struggling on what terms to Google –  BIOSTALL Oct 6 '12 at 17:55
I don't think this is a question where googling is going to help. It's mostly a software design problem, and these tend to be very specific to the project at hand. –  tdammers Oct 6 '12 at 18:01

You can actually pull this off without using a computer at all. Using an Arduino with a WiFi shield, the Arduino can control the lock motor, the keypad, and communicate to a remote server (provided you have a suitable WiFi access point installed in your house).

I think your question is really too vague and hardware-oriented for stack overflow, but here's some things to consider.

You're describing an access control system or an entry control system. Searching the web for those terms (and maybe throwing in “keypad”) will turn up lots and lots of hits.

There are almost certainly off-the-shelf systems that do what you need. Searching for the terms I mentioned (keypad access/entry control system) will give you leads to finding some.

If you decide to build your own, you should use an off-the-shelf keypad. You can probably find keypads that connect to a computer over a serial, USB, or bluetooth connection. You can probably also find keypads that connect over wired or wireless ethernet. You need to decide what will best suit your needs. And you'll need to make the same decision for your actuator (motorized door lock or whatever).
