I'm having some issues when I really stress test my networking code. Essentially once the socket is set up it calls this:

But yea, at some point when I stress test the system (say 500 or so clients sending lots of messages at once), I notice maybe 1 packet in every 4 million to just not get recieved. I'm not sure if the issue lies in the sending or the recieving, which is why I have included both methods. However I will point out that if I choose to send another packet from the client, it still sends and receives correctly, so it is not just queued or something.

Can anyone see something I am missing?

The two read loops (e.g. while (readCount < length)) are buggy. You always read at offset zero. You should read at an ever-increasing offset.

This lead to overwriting of already-read data.

Also, I'm not sure if it is a good idea to mix synchronous and asynchronous reads. You lose the benefit of asynchronous code that way and still have to deal with callbacks and such. I think you should decide on one style and stick to it.

thats because the stream may only have read 2 bytes, but I know the length of the packet is written to 4 bytes, so I need to keep reading until I have a full 4 bytes worth of data that has been read –  Ash Oct 8 '12 at 11:34

I understand that. You are reading at the beginning of the buffer though. If you happen to read two two-byte chunks ((1, 2), (3, 4)) your buffer would contain (3, 4, 0, 0). That's a bug. –  usr Oct 8 '12 at 11:36

No as surely im reading from the stream and it consumes the stream? while (readCount < 4) { readCount += networkStream.Read(readBuffer, 0, readBuffer.Length - readCount); } –  Ash Oct 8 '12 at 11:37

This type of nested-loops asynchronous code is extremely complicated. I recommend you switch to using Task's. That will cut out some of the complexity. Pre C#5 you might want to take a look at emulating the C#5 async feature using iterators: blogs.msdn.com/b/pfxteam/archive/2009/06/30/9809774.aspx I have used this pattern and it removed 99% of the complexity of async code. It reads almost like synchronous code. –  usr Oct 8 '12 at 11:49
