I have one-to-many bi-directional relationship between SiteMember class and Post class:

SiteMember class

@OneToMany(mappedBy = "siteMember",cascade=CascadeType.ALL)
private List<Post> postList;

Post class

@ManyToOne(cascade = {CascadeType.PERSIST, CascadeType.REFRESH, CascadeType.MERGE})
@JoinColumn(name = "MEMBER_ID")
private SiteMember siteMember;

If SiteMember can post a lot (hundreds) of Posts in different times, can this bi-directional relationship cause performance problems due to cascading?.

I heard that bi-directional relationships are faster than unidirectional ones. Is it true? What's the meaning of an association being lazily or eagerly fetched?

Check this article which talks about ways for improving performance with JPA. In the article its mentioned that

Cascading persist a potentially dangerous thing to do, as it could trigger a traversal of your entire object model on every persist call. This is an important point, and I added this issue purposefully to highlight this point, as it is a common mistake made in JPA applications. The cascade persists causes each persist call to order-line to persist its order, and every order-line of the order again.

For the difference between eager and lazy loading, it has been asked at stackoverflow multiple times, check this answer which would give you a good understanding!

For the sake of readability, following is the explanation (copied from above mentioned answer):

Sometimes you have two entities and there's a relationship between them. For example, you might have an entity called University and another entity called Student.

The University entity might have some basic properties such as id, name, address, etc. as well as a property called students:

public class University {
 private String id;
 private String name;
 private String address;
 private List<Student> students;

 // setters and getters

Now when you load a University from the database, JPA loads its id, name, and address fields for you. But you have two options for students: to load it together with the rest of the fields (i.e. eagerly) or to load it on-demand (i.e. lazily) when you call the university's getStudents() method.

When a university has many students it is not efficient to load all of its students with it when they are not needed. So in suchlike cases, you can declare that you want students to be loaded when they are actually needed. This is called lazy loading.

JPA Spec assumes that in general most of the applications will require the singleton relations by default be eager, whereas multi value relations by default be lazy - check this stackoverflow.com/questions/10127831/jpa-default-fetch-type – Anshu Oct 8 '12 at 17:40
