I have an MR job that writes multiple rows with one column each. Though I pass a non-null value for the column name, I get the following Exception

java.io.IOException: InvalidRequestException(why:column name must not be empty) at org.apache.cassandra.hadoop.ColumnFamilyRecordWriter$RangeClient.run(ColumnFamilyRecordWriter.java:307) Caused by: InvalidRequestException(why:column name must not be empty) at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$batch_mutate_result.read(Cassandra.java:19477) at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$Client.recv_batch_mutate(Cassandra.java:1035) at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$Client.batch_mutate(Cassandra.java:1009) at org.apache.cassandra.hadoop.ColumnFamilyRecordWriter$RangeClient.run(ColumnFamilyRecordWriter.java:299)

Is there something I am mising here?

Here is the reducer that I've written -

"Empty" means "non-null, zero length." That is not a valid column name.

jbellis - Thanks for taking time to help. I was able to infer as much. I would like to add the issue that caused me much trouble yesterday - After submitting a mutation list to the Context, the reducer went on going fine with the iteration of the other inputs till the point where the exception was thrown by the ColumnFamilyRecordWriter. When I checked the reducer log files to see the latest mutation that was added, it was non-empty and got me confused. I didn't take the asynchronous nature of the MR into account here. –  gokul Oct 10 '12 at 5:02

Add logs to you reducer to see all column names it transwer to context. It seem you column family is an empty string. Log all the datam not only colName
