1) Could you please provide me with some real use-cases when we need to create our own classloader?

2) Some tutorial says: "Classes loaded by parent classloaders are visible to child classloaders but not vice versa". What do they mean by the word 'visibility' here? May be they mean that native methods of java.lang.Classloader will understand that the class with the given signature was already loaded by parent classloader. Or may be I should code this logic by myself in my custom classloader? Or this means something different?

3) Where can I find the byte code of some class?

4) JVM considers 2 classes different if loaded by 2 different classloaders. Do they mean 2 different instances of classloaders, or 2 different classloaders implementations (classes)?

5) I saw several custom classloaders implementing some cache of loaded classes. But really, do we need this cache? The java.lang.Classloader has findLoadedClass(String name) method which checks if the class of the name specified was already loaded exactly by given classloader. So why to use cache?

6) Does the classloaders have something in common with the AspectJ and Spring Advice techniques?

  1. An example is application server. Each deployed application is running in separate "box" where classes a loaded by per-applicaion class loader. You can also think about customizable platforms, plugins etc where you do want isolation.
  2. Visibility means that you can create instance of the class by this class loader without getting ClassDefNotFoundError or ClassNotFoundException
  3. I have no idea what ny class is... sorry.
  4. 2 different instance of classloader. Think about 2 instances of UrlClassLoader that have different classpaths. Probably one of them will load class A successfully because this class can be found in this class loader's claaspath while second class loader will fail. Or probably both will succeed but will load different versions of class A.
  5. I believe that cache significantly improves performance in this case. Class loading is very complicated and CPU intensive process. It is a pity to run it every time you need new instance of already loaded class.

Where #2 becomes significant is when there are multiple child class loaders. If you have 2 child classloaders: childA and childB. childA can instantiate classes loaded by the parent or by itself, but not classes loaded by childB. Thus code loaded by a child classloaders are iso;ated from one another. –  Devon_C_Miller Oct 12 '12 at 16:32

2) usually when a class loader is asked for a class by name, it'll query the parent class loader first; if the parent loader returns a class, the child loader will use that one, instead of trying to load its own.

however this is not a strict rule, it can be violated. the child loader can do pretty much whatever it wants to.

5) findLoadedClass() should be very fast, I don't see a need for another cache.
