I have a database with ~600 tables and I am creating a unit-testable data access layer using POCO, EF 4.1, Repository and unit of work patterns. This mean that I have ~600 POCOs classes for entities, then for each entity class I have a repository class. I am using idea of aggregation from domain driven design which lead to creating bounded contexts that are specific to related sections in domain model. so far we have identified ~40 bounded context. What I am confused about is how to model unit of work. Should there be one unit of work per respoistory or should it depend upon number of context that I have. I can always have one huge unit of work but then this may take away all advantages that I get by using smaller and targetted bounded contexts.

You probably want to model your unit of work by the groups of tables you are modifying at a time. You also might consider not creating all of your tables as entities in a single model. –  Josh C. Oct 15 '12 at 15:48
do you really need all those repositories? 600 poco classes also seems way too much. are you really sure that EF (or ORM at all) is the perfect choice to your problem? –  Peter Porfy Oct 15 '12 at 15:50

@Peter Our current system use an ORM (NHibernate) for data-acess but now we are migrating towards using EF. As part of this move, we also want to make code unit-testable. That's where we start introducing repositories. Do we have any other options to make this code unit-testable without adding repositories of all those entities? –  imak Oct 15 '12 at 17:36
I don't think I can suggest any option without knowing more about the actual code which seems to be very large. It just feel a maintenance nightmare to create 600 entity with 600 repositories. It just doesn't feel right. –  Peter Porfy Oct 15 '12 at 20:04
