I happened to find this code, which seems to run fine. Surprisingly, (passing the checkings, for the MIT course) it fails only when the annual interest rate is 0.15, being OK for the other cases. I'm quite a newbie, so I don't have any hope to solve it for today, but if someone could give me some light on the issue, I'd be truly grateful!

sorry, I should have been clear with my question. I get the right results for all the randomized test cases with the exception of the few in which the interest rate (annual) is 0.15. I don't find the point, but it's like this :( –  Gorka Sillero Oct 17 '12 at 0:55

example, for balance= 32000 and a.i.r = 0.2 it gets an output of 29157.09, the right one. However, for balance = 437092 and annualInterestRate = 0.15 the correct answer is 38964.14 while mine is 42249.37. it's a big difference, too big to have fitted that good the results of the other cases –  Gorka Sillero Oct 17 '12 at 1:00

I think the condition

if balance <=0:
    break

inside the for month in range(1,13): is wrong. If payment is so large that the balance goes negative after 11 payments instead of 12 payments, then the loop breaks prematurely. I think that is what is happening with excessively large payment of 42249.37.
