I was wondering how do you convert from an 8 bit 2's complement to a 16 bit 2's complement signed number?

1100 0110 is an example

sign extension. The 8th bit becomes the value of the rest of the bits. So if its positive, the upper byte is all zeroes. If its negative, the upper byte is all 1s. –  yhyrcanus Oct 21 '12 at 3:59

It's called sign extending. You simply repeat the most significant bit until you have the right number of bits. For your example, it would be 1111 1111 1100 0110

so if my number was somethine like 0011 0110 then a 16 bit sign extension would be 0000 0000 0011 0110? –  Masterminder Oct 21 '12 at 4:06
