I need to post process some FORTRAN output files in R. For example, I need to read 20 lines from the output files and ignore spaces. Then convert them to vectors or matrices. I am wondering is there a better way to ignore the spaces and keep the values? Thanks! Here is my Out.txt file (all I need is the last four columns):

Below is my approach:

dd=as.numeric(ldply(strsplit(b[88334],"   "))) # I have to adjust the amount of spaces in
                                               # order to separate numbers out

If you don't mind relabelling the columns, this is a pretty straightforward read.table exercise.

b <- read.table("path/to/Out.txt",skip=5)

And even if you're not relabeling columns, you can write a function to parse out the columns and then pass that to read.table –  Arcymag Oct 23 '12 at 18:58

@BrandonBertelsen, is there other ways to read this matrix faster? read.table is based on scan, right? Can I do it by readLines? –  tao.hong Oct 25 '12 at 21:53
    
I'm not sure to be honest. It's a bit outside of my domain. I'm not a "big data" person. I would recommend taking this example and asking a new question from your comment. I'm sure someone else will have an answer. –  Brandon Bertelsen Oct 26 '12 at 1:44
