# How to calculate Bridge Characteristics Area, Hydraulic Radius from 2 PolyLines cross section and obvert [closed]

I have cross section data at a number of bridges...

The data is split by CODES into 3 types of data

• The cross section
• The Obvert (Underside of the bridge)
• The Deck

My main interest is in looking at the Cross section and the Obvert to calculate the Area and Perimeter of the seperate cells of the bridge

Is there a simple way to calculate the area between the two lines ??

If I want to split the bridge into the 7 seperate cells....

Initially I will define the bridge as equivalent rectangular cells....

but eventually I want to use the cross section shape to determine capacity

Here is a typical cross section data set: Points starting with Code in Column 4 of P are the cross section, U the Underside, O the overtopping Deck ( roughly)

The data is that supplied for a Cross section at location 5895.66. The cross section is made up of the polygon created by plotting the Distance (X) and Elevation (Y). This Cross section goes from -358.74 to 58.5 a total of 417.24m wide.The cross section Points are coded with PE,PP and PA. There is a 2nd and 3rd Cross section which is the Bridge Underside (Obvert) and Bridge Deck... This data is not signal data, it is survey data. –  Rudy Van Drie Oct 24 '12 at 11:34
