I have the following class

    [DataMember(Name = "Key")]

    }

    [DataMember(Name = "Description")]
    public string Description
    {
        get { return _description; }
        set
        {
            if (value != _description)
            {

                OnPropertyChanged("Description");
            }
        }
    }

    [DataMember(Name = "DefaultValue")]
    public string DefaultValue
    {
        get { return _defaultValue; }
        set
        {
            if (value != _defaultValue)
            {

The OnPropertyChanged code was recently added and I changed the inheritance to derive from PropertyChangedBase.

Before the inheritance was changed the class has been serialised to a file as a component of other classes. After the inheritance was changed I get the following error message when deserialising:

Unexpected error. Error in Line xyz. Element 'DefaultValue' ... is unexpected. The element 'PropertyChanged' is expected.

I removed the inheritance and copied the code from PropertyChangedBase and the deserialisation is successful.

I'm trying to understand what is going on here.

  • Why does the inheritance break the serialisation but the in-line code does not?
  • Why is PropertyChanged expected when inheriting but not when in-line?
  • What is the error message really saying?

You should add the KnownTypeAttribute to PropertyChangedBase like [KnownType(typeof(TemplateParameter))] Otherwise you should get serialization exceptions. –  Jehof Oct 24 '12 at 5:50

I forgot that! Up til now I have only used PropertyChangedBase in ViewModel classes and kept my Model 'clean'. Guess that will teach me to make shortcuts! –  paul Oct 24 '12 at 5:56
    
Do you also want to serialize PropertyChangedEventHandler? If not you should decorate it with [IgnoreDataMember] –  Jehof Oct 24 '12 at 6:01
    
I tried [IgnoreDataMember] on PropertyChangedEventHandler but it didn't help - got the same error –  paul Oct 24 '12 at 6:15
