my problem is, where is says "triangle.addActionListener(new ShapeAction());" in my code there is a error that says ShapeAction symbol is not found, what am i doing wrong here? and could someone look at my If statement, its ment to do: once a menu item is clicked it creates a instance of that shape from another class

You should introduce inner class ShapeAction outside the main method, inside the MyFrame class. And you create a local main's method class instead of that.

Simply move it outside the main method:

your a life saver :) have you any ideas on how to get my slider to update the dimension on each shape? then output the values to the boundary length and area jtextfeild? –  john Oct 24 '12 at 14:59

@StevenMcilhone its a trivial coding task which you can handle easily if you have some basic knowledge of Java and Swing. I'd suggest you to read a few articles about Swing (here for example docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/ui/index.html). –  Mikle Garin Oct 24 '12 at 15:10
