I have seen several examples how to present a custom UIStoryboardSegue with custom animation. Basically, you subclass UIStoryBoardSegue and override "perform" method, i.e. like this:

    UIViewController *source = self.sourceViewController;
    UIViewController *destination = self.destinationViewController;

    // Create a UIImage with the contents of the destination
    UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(destination.view.bounds.size);
    [destination.view.layer renderInContext:UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext()];
    UIImage *destinationImage = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext();
    UIGraphicsEndImageContext();

    // Add this image as a subview to the tab bar controller
    UIImageView *destinationImageView = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:destinationImage];
    [source.parentViewController.view addSubview:destinationImageView];

    // Scale the image down and rotate it 180 degrees (upside down)
    CGAffineTransform scaleTransform = CGAffineTransformMakeScale(0.1, 0.1);
    CGAffineTransform rotateTransform = CGAffineTransformMakeRotation(M_PI);

But what should I do if I want custom animation while removing Segue from the screen? Override some other method in this class and call it. Or perform animation at the place, where I call "dismissViewController", which feels not logical?

For changing the animation on a dismissViewController you have to set the modalTransitionStyle to a UIModalTransitionStyle on the presentedViewController.

- (IBAction)dismiss:(id)sender {
    self.presentingViewController.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal;
    [self.presentingViewController dismissViewControllerAnimated:YES completion:nil];
}

tnx for the answer, but I asked about the place where I should create animation. When I present a view (modal or push) I do it in perform method, but when I want to dismiss it, I usually call dismissViewController in a parent's delegate, is it a proper place to create animation there. –  Artem Oct 26 '12 at 8:47

ok, now I see your opinion. But is it a good practice to setup present animation in Segue subclass and dismiss animation in VC class, what do you think? –  Artem Oct 26 '12 at 9:52
    
as far as I know there is no other possibility when dismissing a viewController. You can use the same technique for presenting a view controller if you want. The downside is that there are no options for custom animations without doing some tricks. –  Pfitz Oct 26 '12 at 10:19
    
But I think for custom animations you can do the same trick as in my sample code. Didn't try, but I think it should work. –  Artem Oct 26 '12 at 11:20

To avoid any transformation, here is the code I successfully use (btw answer to Subview has wrong orientation ):
