Can you please help me with C# source code for Console, Web or Win form to encrypt and decrypt 128-bit blocks of plain text with Simplified DES (S-DES)? I know that C# has a class of DES in System.Security.Cryptography namespace but I can not use it for academic use.

You are directly asking for code, code which is only usable for academic purposes. I think the idea is that you implement it yourself. –  owlstead Oct 28 '12 at 10:27

I have written an article in CodeProject, to Implement a simplified version of the DES block cipher algorithm using C# to encrypt and decrypt binary files.

The SDES.cs class is a generic class which could be used to encrypt/decrypt binary files or plain text.

I will change the two following methods in MainFrm.cs file to suit your needs

private void Encrypt()
private void Decrypt()

The changes as follow, instead of opening the file using the BinaryReader class,

  • I will loop over the plain text "string" and read it char by char
  • convert each char to byte
  • encrypt the byte and append it to byte array
  • finally convert the encrypted bytes to chars again

the code will be:

private void Encrypt()
{
     byte[] output = new byte[txt_enc_in.Text.Length];
     for (int i = 0; i < output.Length; i++)
     {
          output[i] = my_Des.Encrypt(Convert.ToByte(txt_enc_in.Text[i]));
     }
     txt_enc_out.Text = "";
     for (int i = 0; i < output.Length; i++)
     {
          txt_enc_out.Text += Convert.ToChar(output[i]);
     }
 }  

the inverse steps also applied on the Decrypt() method, also some changes should be applied on the GUI. the final code is available here.

There's a fairly verbose (=readable) Python implementation of that algorithm here:

You could translate that into C# and be on your merry way. :)
