I am writing an engineering application that I want to execute as both a normal Java application on the desktop and also as a web-based applet. The application works perfectly from the desktop. As a JApplet, it executes with no errors, but doesn't actually display anything. My code creates a new object named sim = new DynamicSimulationPanel() which extends JPanel. This sim object has a setBackground(Color.black) statement and indeed the Applet responds to this and produces a blank screen of the same color as above. None of the GUI componets (a few JButtons etc) show up and I am unable to start the simulation to check if the painting to the jpanel works. Am I doing anything obviously wrong, here?

The buttons/text boxes that don't appear are on the panelGroup JPanel in the DynamicSimulationPanel.

Don't write if (isApplet == true) or if (isApplet == false) but just write if (isApplet) or if (!isApplet), it's much more readable –  Guillaume Polet Oct 28 '12 at 18:03

So I found a solution, applet and desktop app both work perfectly.

I create a single class file that extended JPanel and invoked all of the other Jpanel classes. Then, really importantly, when I added this master panel (mp) to the applet I did it inside the applet's init() method, rather than calling a new MainWindow() as before:

You only create the buttons and the tabbed pane when the condition isApplet is not met. When isApplet is true, the only code that runs is

Hi, thanks for the response. The buttons to which I referred are in the DynamicSimulationPanel();. The buttons created in the MainWindow constructor when isApplet=false are to do with the JFrame-based interface. Is there anything else that is obviously wrong, do you think?
