I've got a series of 361 .png files that I'm trying to convert to video, and for whatever reason the resulting video is just black. Here is the FFmpeg code I'm using:

ffmpeg -f image2 -i "FeatureTour_%05d.png" -r 30 -vcodec libx264 -b:v 9600k "FeatureTour.mp4"

The files are formatted correctly (FeatureTour_00001.png) and no errors are thrown. It just results in a 160kb mp4 files that's black.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Please update your question to include the complete ffmpeg console output. What player are you using? Does it play as expected with ffplay? Remember that ffmpeg usage questions are better suited for superuser, and it's why your last ffmpeg question was migrated there. –  LordNeckbeard Oct 31 '12 at 18:02

The main reason I actually posted here is because the "ffmpeg" tag shows 2,774 results. On Super User it shows 384. –  Brandon Durham Oct 31 '12 at 19:00

That is a common mistake although you'll probably get better ffmpeg usage answers at superuser. Many of those numbers represent ffmpeg API questions. –  LordNeckbeard Oct 31 '12 at 20:17

Add -pix_fmt yuv420p as an output option:

ffmpeg -r 30 -i "FeatureTour_%05d.png" -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -pix_fmt yuv420p FeatureTour.mp4

Otherwise ffmpeg will output 4:4:4, as shown in your console output, which your player does not support.

I moved -r 30 so it gets applied to the input. By default, ffmpeg will use a frame rate of 25 for image inputs and will duplicate frames to go from 25 (input) to 30 (output). Setting a frame rate as in input option will allow ffmpeg to inherit the same value for the output and prevent frame duplications or drops; although you may need to supply both an input and output -r if you require different rates for both and don't mind frame dupes/drops.

I also changed -b:v 9600k to -crf 24. CRF is generally recommended unless you need to target a specific output file size. Use the highest value that still gives you an acceptable quality (23 is default). See the FFmpeg and x264 Encoding Guide for more information and examples.

Lastly, I removed -f image2 which is often superfluous.
