My program runs fine except I can not get the my System out to pull over the getYear method and the getRestockingFee nethod from my Project 3 subclass. I could use a nudge in the right direction, I have to be missing something crazy.

The class getYear() does not exist in Software, only in its subclass Project3. Why did you expect to be able to call it for Software instances? –  Patricia Shanahan Nov 5 '12 at 6:00
    
I thought that since it was a subclass of software that it would be able to this is my problem I do not know how to get from Project three back to inventory. –  user1795189 Nov 5 '12 at 6:07

The Java compiler, when given a Software object, has no way to know that it is really a Project3. In real life, if I put a Granny Smith apple in a box, and I tell you that there is an apple in the box, would you be able to tell me whether it boolean isGreen()? Java has the same problem!

There are possible 3 solutions:

  1. When you construct the object, store it in a Project3 variable (and make sure the constructed type is a Project3!

  2. Tell the JVM: "Hey this is really a Project3!" You can do this by casting the object to the correct time. Syntax ((Project3) mySoftware).getYear()

  3. Define a meaning for the method getYear in the *super*class. This would be like telling you "hey, assume all Apples aren't green (isGreen() returns false)"... but if I know it's a Granny Smith subclass apple, isGreen returns true now!

Your choice of solution depends on what you want your system to do.

the assignment is specific Modify the Inventory Program by creating a subclass of the product class that uses one additional unique feature of the product you chose In the subclass, create a method to calculate the value of the inventory of a product with the same name as the method previously created for the product class. The subclass method should also add a 5% restocking fee Modify the output to display this additional feature you have chosen and the restocking fee. The key rule you need to learn is that an object has a set of methods that is fixed when it is created. Once you say "new Software" there is nothing you can do to make it look like a Project3. On the other hand, you can treat a Project3 as a Software, because it inherits methods from Software. –  Patricia Shanahan Nov 5 '12 at 6:41
