# break overhead vs control flag

I was using a naive prime generated function. This code takes about, 5.25 seconds to generate 10k prime numbers (device_primes[0] holds the number primes already found, the remaining position the prime numbers found).

I was just starting to optimize the code, and i made the follow modification, instead of :

``````for (c = 2; c <= num - 1; c++)
{
if (num % c == 0) //not prime
break;
}
if (c == num) {...}
``````

i have now :

``````   int prime = 1;

...
for (c = 2; c <= num - 1 && prime; c++)
{
if (num % c == 0) prime = 0; // not prime
}
if (prime) {...} // if prime
``````

Now i can generate 10k in 0.707s. I was just wondering why such speed up with a this simple modification, is break that bad?

You know, you can optimize it further by replacing the `if` statement inside the `for` loop with the statement: `prime = !(num % c);`, and running the loop up to `sqrt(num)` instead of `num - 1`... –  Eitan T Nov 5 '12 at 16:47
It may have to do with the branching, you can read up on branching in GPU's here It's somewhat different to CPU's –  Tony The Lion Nov 5 '12 at 16:51
Are you checking the results to make sure that the 10k generated primes are correct? What happens if you change your for loop to: for (c = 2; (c <= num - 1) && prime; c++) –  Robert Crovella Nov 5 '12 at 16:52
@EitanT yep, i was think about implement some of this optimization (and other according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sieve_of_Eratosthenes.). I just stop when i saw such improvement "only" by taking the break out. –  dreamcrash Nov 5 '12 at 17:02
@Robert Crovella for the small inputs i check by printing than, for 10k i check trough a validation function in cpu. I will try our suggestion. –  dreamcrash Nov 5 '12 at 17:11
