My requirement are really simple: I just want to have a camera preview with a transparent drawable in front of it.

The big issue is that alpha="0" seems to work (no picture) but as soon as I set some alpha value (even "1") the picture is displayed with no transparency!

android:alpha is a float value from 0-1. As in:

  • 0 is invisible.
  • 0.5 is 50% transparent.
  • 1 is completely opaque.

Use android:alpha="0.05" instead.

@Rania-Boy Remove the attribute entirely? If the button is still transparent then you've probably used an alpha'd color or a translucent image. If you've checked all this and are still having issues, please ask a new question. – Eric Nov 26 '13 at 21:43
