I am wondering what a List Object is looking behind scenes. Is there an array that gets bigger, an Element that has a reference toanother object and so on. Is there any better way to implement my own List in any language like C#, Java,... or what would you use?

Edit: I forgot to say that the ability to use index to get or set an object should be aviable as fast as possible.

That is not possible to answer without knowing your language/framework.

For example, a .NET Framework List<T> is based on an array, and it is resized when the initial capacity is exceeded. But in another framework, it could potentially be implemented as another datastructure.

As with everything else, it depends. For small lists, the overhead in resizing is neglible, and accessing by index is always O(1). It does matter on large lists that need resizing though - that is why the list can be constructed with a predefined capacity, in order to avoid expensive resizes. – driis Nov 11 '12 at 16:34
